Fungus Amungus!

While out at the farm with Chris the other day, I was checking out the funky looking corn that is growing as some of our dry land corn. I asked Chris if this is a fungus and he said that it is and is called Smut. He said that when the corn is battered by hail, it gets bruised and allows the fungus to grow, causing the corn to look like this. EWWW!!! He also said that this can be caused by stress (it is dry land corn and we didn't get a whole lot of consistent moisture in this field). The top picture is a younger ear of corn while the bottom one is more mature! Looks delicious don't it??!!

Hopefully you don't try to eat this Fungus. It is pretty gross to look at. I couldn't imagine actually trying to stuff it in my mouth!
